HPV screening

In Hungary, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women aged 15 to 44 after breast cancer, and in 95% of cases it is caused by HPV (human papillomavirus) infection.

More than 150 types of HPV have been identified, most of which the immune system fights off without us even noticing. However, 14 high-risk types can lead to cancer. Types 16 and 18 pose the greatest risk: their presence can increase the risk of cervical cancer up to twentyfold.

Around 80% of sexually active adults contract HPV at some point in their lives. The virus also affects men: they can carry and transmit it, and in men, too, it can cause malignant tumours and genital lesions.

For prevention and early detection, annual screening is recommended – even for those in a long-term relationship.

Vitalium Laser Centre offers HPV sampling and typing. The test covers the high-risk (HR) HPV types 16, 18, 26, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 53, 56, 58, 59, 66, 68, 69, 73 and 82, as well as the low-risk (LR) types 6, 11, 40, 42, 43, 44, 54, 61 and 70. Results are available within 10 working days.

For HPV screening, we recommend a comprehensive gynaecological examination, consisting of a discussion of your symptoms and medical history, a bimanual gynaecological examination, cervical cytology and HPV-X sampling, and a transvaginal pelvic ultrasound scan.

The price covers the analysis of the sample only and is charged in addition to the gynaecological consultation or comprehensive examination.
