Our skin is our largest and most visible organ. Besides shaping how others see us, it plays a vital role in keeping us healthy: as an immune organ, it forms a barrier between us and our surroundings and protects us from harmful external influences.

Some skin changes are easy to spot, and it is worth seeing a doctor about them as soon as possible. However, some skin conditions cause no symptoms or appear in hidden areas of the body, so they may go unnoticed for a long time. That is why we consider regular screening so important. Alongside skin health, dermatology also covers diseases of the hair and nails.

The first step of a dermatological examination is taking your medical history – a thorough conversation not only about your symptoms, but also about the medication you take, your lifestyle and any conditions that run in your family. This is followed by a physical examination, which may cover the entire body surface if necessary. Where indicated, moles may also be examined using a special instrument called a dermatoscope.
The specialist then recommends treatment and, if necessary, further tests such as histology, laboratory tests or an internal medicine consultation.
